Piano Essentials Masterclass for all Musicians

By Utsav Lal

The piano is one of the most universal and functional instruments and a constant companion not just for pianists, but also for other instrumentalists and vocalists. It works as an important tool to demonstrate, convey ideas and bridge the gap between the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic worlds simultaneously.

This masterclass is an introduction to the many facets of this instrument and a primer on how to play, perform, practice, compose and arrange on this instrument, irrespective of your level. I have structured this masterclass so it's useful for everyone from beginners to advanced musicians to interpret and utilize the same information at different levels. So, whether you’re taking your first steps on an instrument or you’re a highly skilled musician looking to expand your toolkit, this session is designed for you!

Here are some of the main points we will talk about-

  1. How the Piano Works - Short introduction to the physics of piano mechanisms, how to create different tonal nuances, how to utilize the foot pedals and many other secrets of this instrument that has up to 10000 moving parts.
  2. Building Technique- These modular finger exercises work for everyone , from absolute beginners up to highly advanced players, to develop dexterity, fluidity and finger strength. They start out at the most basic level with options to add clear progressive stages that gradually transform them into something that would keep a professional pianist occupied for hours! (I still use these every day)
  3. Hand Independence- This is one of the most rewarding aspects of learning this instrument. We will introduce skills for hands to work with and against each other, creating several layers of sound at the same time. We will talk about basic Left hand patterns to accompany melodies in the right hand.
  4. Finger Selection- One of the most challenging parts of learning the piano is good finger selection to play smoothly and effortlessly. We will talk about how to do this and learn basic finger patterns for the most commonly used scales and phrases.
  5. Efficient Practice- We will talk about the most efficient way to get not just the quickest results but the most stable and well grounded results. We will also talk about posture and the physicality of playing piano which means checks to ensure your body, shoulders, arms, fingers and center of balance is in the perfect position to get the best sound out of this instrument.
